This is a detail of a study for a painting which I have not completed. I always make studies, in a variety of media before beginning a portrait, in order to organize the main approach and composition. Each painting tends to follow its own path stylistically; as a general paradigm the emotional content of the work, as reflected in my response to the sitter is reflected in the execution. This study began as an effort toward a full figure portrait, life size. It is done with oil on heavy carton paper, sealed and applied to a rigid panel.
I have found that oil on paper can become a finished painting in itself, and lately since I began using heavy carton applied to a wooden support I can frame the work unglazed, in the same manner as a painting on canvas.
